Tzu-Chi Yeh Listens to the Song of the Wind

Tzu-Chi Yeh was born in Yuli, Hualien County, Taiwan in 1957. In 1989, he graduated from the City University of New York with a master's degree in art creation. During his 17 years in the United States and even after returning to Taiwan in 2006, he never stopped engaging in artistic creation, often using traditional tempera techniques to depict the unique, humid, arborous landscapes of southern Taiwan. During his recent years, these iconic images became a symbol of his longing for his motherland and his loved ones. Misty Rain: North Link reflects such feelings.

North Link Line is a railway connecting Hualien County with Su'ao City. The lush green pine forest depicted in the work may be the scenery the artist admired while sitting in a train taking him to his home. It seems the wind was blowing at that time, many branches are swaying slightly, reminiscent of ripples on the water. The sky is mostly gray; the clouds seem to be falling down, as if ready to pour. The sky and the forest divide the picture diagonally into two even halves. At that time, the artist was no longer subject to the confusion of young age, yet the woods still embraced him with open arms like a mother embraces her child, comforting him and welcoming him back. This work is truly worthy of continuous reflection.
