Born in 1928, Domoto Hisao was a member of the highly influential family in the art scene in Kyoto, Japan, and studied traditional Japanese art from an early age. In 1952, Domoto went to Paris to learn Western art and has devoted himself to abstractionism, breaking away from the restriction of his early training. Through Toshimitsu Imai’s introduction, Domoto gained recognition from Michel Tapié and became a rising star in the Art Informal school in Paris. Inspired by Sam Francis, with whom he kept a profound friendship with, Domoto later returned to Japanese aesthetics. By discovering his own cultural root, he established a unique style which retains the exquisite nature of Oriental spirit, contains the figurative features of Western painting, and transcends Japanese decorative art. In the work, Chain Reaction, Domoto combined the chain shape with circles in a continuously rhythmical composition. Together with the brilliant and radial color, the work presents an intensively visual rhyme, bringing out the viewer’s admiration from the heart.
