PROVENANCE
Private collection, AsiaThe Crowd — Portrait of An Era
He Dan was born in 1960 in Shan Xi Province of China. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts in 1983 and continued the further study in France. Since coming back to China, he has been long committed to the teaching of art at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. In 2011, he was promoted to be the Associate Dean. His works are collected by major institutions both home and abroad.
The work belongs to the most representative series of works The Crowd. The strong national red color sets a tone for the magnificent scene that shows a whole crowd of people surrounded on the square. A massive crowd of Millions of people form a massive crowd, regardless of their age and sex. They are hurried to walk away, filling the whole picture from the front to the distance. Some are walking in teams while talking, some bury their heads in arms in depress, some are looking back and seeking for something, some are driving slowly. The distinct appearance, expression, movement and clothes of each person are portrayed as a stopped moment by the artist via his brush. The painting reflects an amazing capability of He Dan in creating figures and pictures, which is both compelling and admirable. Right in the up-middle of the painting sits a construction with typical extrinsic features of the Chinese governmental buildings. It implies the superior political class, the local authority-centred living situation and the mentality of the local people.
