Every time Schoeni came to my studio,he would look at my works in great detail and give me encouragement and suggestions. At times we would disagree and there were some tense moments. However, his respect for the artists was always deeply appreciated. It was his passion for art that had gained him honour and respect amongst fellow artists,as well as help expand the reputation of his gallery.
─Chen Yu
Chen Yu was born in 1969 in Guizhou province and graduated from the Printmaking Department within the Central Academy of Fine Arts.He came to be known by the public after being featured in Sharp New Sights:From Young Artists Born Around 1970,a group exhibition at the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen. He later held two solo exhibitions at Schoeni Art Gallery in 2001 and 2005 and was a participant in the ChinaArt exhibition tour in Thailand,Spain,Hungary, and Germany, which further propelled the artist’s growing recognition to further heights. His most recent works could be seen at Istanbul’s Project 4L Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art and Beijing’s Riverside Art Museum. The artist is known for his idiographic pictorial language of placing several near-identical portraits side-by-side.Using Political Pop and Cynical Realism as his main tools of expression,Such techniques have made him particularly prominent in China’s contemporary art scene.
Untitled 2002 Series No.6A - C,which is being put up for auction,is one of the most important pieces the artist created during his early period. The large-scale triptych presents 15 juxtaposed portraits, forming an eye-catching and imposing composition reminiscent of illustrations, not unlike those found in books. The array of duplicated portraits creates a certain profoundness and poses a question for the viewers to ask themselves about who they truly are.The three unique facial expressions found among the several identical ones symbolize individual personality, serving as a reminder of the idea that in collective life everyone must behave in the same way and have the same thoughts, falling in line within a strict perceived social standard and never deviating from the norm.Individuals often wear masks to blend in with the crowd and avoid the risk of rejection.Chen Yu attaches great importance to composition,so he tries his best to leave a sense of a deliberate design on the picture, presenting a simple and natural visual effect with an emphasis on connotation and theme. The “heterogeneous” figures are specifically made to hide behind “normality”,displaying the artist’s resistance to the sobering fact that collective harmony is built at the cost of giving up the true self of the individual, while implying his inner desire for spiritual freedom.
