“The talent of Fang Shaohua for painting is almost a gift. It refers not only to his skills for composing complicated paintings with ease, but also to his remarkable control over, and instinctive sense of, painting expression. …… The monumental red porch and arch of ancient buildings, together with the disorderly, dark and graffiti type of modern space, create a kind of huge discrepancy in time frame. His free brush stroke, the pure and placid color tones and, in particular, the hand which holds the umbrella and which is always floating in the sky, all endow the works with an apocalyptic fable effect. In his works, the historical legacy, society and sex and other often represent a disorderly and nongraphic configuration, which seems to be a visual inquiry on the society which if lacking of a sense of direction. …… In the neo-expression painting of Fang Shaohua, we are not able to identify these spiritual and semantic individualities, he excels at creating a sense of history in his works with a relaxed and slightly amusing attitudes and in a freedom-enriched and even splendid style; but he does not make value judgment on the graphic symbols in his pictures lightly, he would rather express his state of retrospection on between the material and the spiritual worlds and between and history and the present time, through the method of using expressive language to produce contradiction between different visual elements. He is such an artist that his works can describe and express themselves. ”
