Extend the Tradition, Recreate the Classics
Ryozo Kato’s works are well known for his Chinese-style landscape painting. His accurate and meticulous brush strokes create vibrant mountainous views which connote deep philosophy and spirituality. Through his contemporary interpretation of a traditional painting subject, his nature scape brings viewers sense of emancipation beyond time and space. Born in Japan, Kato graduated from Tama University in Japan with a degree in Japanese painting. He is famous for landscape paintings which inherited traditional Japanese painting with a refined twist from Chinese Song and Yuan painting, depicts a silent yet strong landscape scenery with his own visual language, thus have developed various facets to traditional Chinese landscape painting.
San Sui Kyo series is the most recognized artwork of Ryoko Kato as his techniques become more mature and exquisite in this series. In this San Sui Kyo that completed in 2016, the artist used refined and soft black brush to paint the structure of the mountains. With his most representative color green and yellow, Kato mixed and merged these two colours together, created layers with shifting light reflections. He used techniques that similar to traditional Chinese ink painting styles to depict mountains and trees, the green tone gives them vibrant lives with a poetic touch. The brush leaves dots and dots on paper, created nostalgic feeling with a scenery of spring rains, reflected misty natural lights, and led the audience to a mystery ambience. Kato spread a refining stone pigment on soft Japanese rice paper, produced a unique light with a foggy effect on the image. The colours mixed and reflected each other, sealed the time in a sudden moment, enhanced a poetic visionary that perfectly expressed mountain scenery within the changing seasons.
