Exploring the Language of Form
The Life Scenery of Su Xiaobai

Having been through the 85 New Wave Art Movement in China, Su Xiaobai went to study at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts in Germany in 1987. Under the influence of German modernism masters such as Konrad Klapheck and Gerhard Richter, Su explored the aesthetics of forms, endowing his works with the rhythm of genuine emotion.

During his stay in Germany, Su purchased a courtyard as a studio and settled there for 15 years. The work, Home View, represents this old residence of Su and embodies his deep feelings. By the use of contrasting colors from the Impressionism tradition, he thoroughly depicted an overall impression of the scene, and vividly portrayed its spiritual prospect. Developed from abstract techniques and figurative sketches, the work, steeped in tension, consists of abstract fields of color and presents a unique perspective. This early work of Xu has shown the segregation of appearance and meaning of images in form and composition, marking significant progress of the artist's exploration of form. A tranquil landscape. A boundless life scenery. The work bears profound humanism connotation which has transcended the landscape scenery.
